Abia Warriors FC of Umuahia were unable to claim points on the road as Bayelsa United secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory in their Matchday 13 NPFL clash at Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa. The Prosperity Boys capitalized on defensive lapses and clinical finishing to claim all three points in a tightly contested encounter.
The Warriors had an early opportunity to take the lead within the opening three minutes when Sunday Megwo was set up for a one-on-one chance, but the forward was unable to convert. Just two minutes later, Bayelsa United struck first, with Chinedu Sunday heading home after Abia Warriors’ defense failed to clear a cross, putting the hosts ahead.
Abia Warriors sought an immediate response and came close in the 21st minute when Suraj Lawal’s clever touch was denied by the Bayelsa keeper, Chisom Chiaha. Persistence paid off in the 38th minute as the Warriors finally drew level.
Innocent Gabriel delivered a sharp cross that caught the home defense off guard, and a failed punch from the goalkeeper allowed the ball to reach Sunday Megwo, who rose to head home the equalizer just before halftime.
The second half saw the Warriors struggle to maintain intensity, and Bayelsa United capitalized on their complacency in the 65th minute. Chinedu Emmanuel slotted home after the visitors reacted too slowly to a cross, restoring the hosts’ lead. Despite numerous substitutions and attempts to change the game, Abia Warriors could not find another goal, and Bayelsa United held on for a valuable win.
