The 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has confirmed its first two relegated casualties following the conclusion of Matchday 37. Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists have both officially dropped to the second tier after failing to secure vital points on a tense Sunday. The results leave both clubs on 40 points, meaning they can no longer mathematically catch up to the teams outside the drop zone with only one fixture remaining.
Bayelsa United’s four-year stay in the top flight ended in Ikenne after a 2-1 defeat to Remo Stars. The visitors took a surprising lead in the fifth minute through Ofem Nneoyi, who finished clinically past goalkeeper Adebiyi Obassa. However, Remo Stars fought back to equalize just before the interval through an Alex Oyowah header. Victor Mbaoma eventually secured the win for the hosts in the 64th minute with his 13th league goal of the campaign.
In Bauchi, Wikki Tourists suffered a similar fate in a five-goal thriller against title-chasing Rivers United. Jonathan Mairiga and Imamu Bala both found the net to give the home side hope twice during the encounter. However, goals from Handsome Surveyor and Chijioke Mbaoma kept the visitors level before Taofeek Otaniyi struck the winner in the 85th minute. The defeat sends Wikki Tourists back to the Nigeria National League (NNL) after just one season in the elite division.
The victory for Rivers United was significant for the top of the table as well. Finidi George’s side remains just one point behind league leaders Rangers International. Rangers secured their own 2-1 win over Bendel Insurance at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium thanks to a brace from Godwin Obaje. The veteran striker moved to 99 career NPFL goals, keeping the "Flying Antelopes" in the driver’s seat for the title.
While the bottom two are confirmed, the battle to avoid the remaining relegation spots continues. Teams like Kun Khalifat FC, Kano Pillars, and Niger Tornadoes secured crucial points to move clear of immediate danger. The league will now witness a grand finale on May 24, where both the championship winner and the final relegated teams will be decided.
