Nigeria Women's Football League side Bayelsa Queens have announced their first major signing ahead of the 2025/2026 football season with the acquisition of Nasarawa Amazons' top striker, Janet Akekoromowei—who was also the NWFL’s second-highest goal scorer in the 2024/25 season.
The Prosperity Ladies released an official statement:
"We are proud to announce the signing of Akekoromowei, the league’s second-highest goal scorer for the 2024/25 season, from Nasarawa Amazons FC.
Janet, who will wear the iconic No. 9 jersey, brings her proven goal-scoring prowess and attacking quality to the Prosperity Girls as we prepare for the CAF Women’s Champions League and the upcoming NWFL Premiership season.
This signing reflects our commitment to strengthening the squad with the best talent as we continue to raise the standard of women’s football in Nigeria and Africa."
Reacting to the move, Akekoromowei said:
“I’m excited to join Bayelsa Queens and can’t wait to give my best for this great club.”
Bayelsa Queens Head Coach, Whyte Ogbonda, expressed his excitement over the new additions, confirming that more signings are underway as preparations intensify for the CAF Women’s Champions League and NWFL season.
“I’m very pleased with the quality of players we’ve brought in so far,” said Coach Ogbonda.
“Janet Akekoromowei and Lucky Mary are both proven attackers with the hunger and talent to help us compete at the highest level. Their arrival will add depth, creativity, and more goal-scoring options to the team.
However, we are not done yet. We are still working to strengthen a few key areas to ensure we have a balanced, competitive squad ready to represent Bayelsa Queens with pride both at home and on the continent.
Our aim is to build a team that can challenge for every trophy. I’m confident the new faces, alongside our existing players, will deliver the results our fans expect.”
Bayelsa Queens Chairman, Robin Apreala, also expressed gratitude and enthusiasm about the signings, while appreciating the support of the Bayelsa State Government and stakeholders.
“We are truly grateful to God Almighty for the successful signing of Janet Akekoromowei and Lucky Mary.
These talented players will add quality and depth to our squad as we prepare for the CAF Women’s Champions League and the new NWFL Premiership season.
I want to sincerely appreciate His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the
Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali, and all stakeholders who continue to stand firmly behind this great team.
Their unwavering support and investment in Bayelsa Queens remain the driving force behind our success and growth.
We will continue to work tirelessly to make the state proud and maintain our status as one of the leading women’s football clubs in Nigeria and Africa.
We believe that with our new additions, and by God’s grace, more quality players will still join us as we build a squad capable of achieving our targets for the season.
We move forward, together and stronger, to the glory of God.”
