The Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament Scouting and Screening Programme has officially kicked off in Yenagoa, the state capital, with over 200 young footballers eager to showcase their talent.
The ongoing exercise targets outstanding players between the ages of 16 and 21 who participated in the Prosperity Cup and aims to offer them a chance to feature in local and international scouting opportunities.
Speaking after the second day of the programme, Vincent Dowell, Head of Community Relations and Governmental Affairs for the Prosperity Cup and Coordinator of the scouting programme, expressed satisfaction with the turnout and level of enthusiasm displayed by the players.
“I’m highly impressed with the turnout. The talent is visible, and I have no doubt that more Precious Benjamins will emerge from this pool,” Dowell said, referencing the Germany-based footballer who previously emerged from the tournament.
Diepreye Teibowei, former Technical Adviser of Bayelsa United and member of the scouting team, remarked that the exercise was beginning to take shape. He disclosed that friendly matches have been scheduled for Friday, June 6, to further evaluate the players’ progress.
Teibowei, a former Julius Berger FC star, noted that the coaching crew is taking time to thoroughly assess and select the most promising talents, some of whom, he said, could soon don the colours of Bayelsa United or other league clubs across Nigeria.
Another coach, Ada Gwegwe, expressed optimism about the eventual outcome of the screening and encouraged the players to see Benjamin Precious as a role model, stressing the importance of hard work and discipline.
Among the players, Onuoha Emmanuel of Federal University Otuoke and Uduak Joel of Bayelsa United Feeders expressed gratitude to the organisers for creating a platform to showcase their skills and chase their football dreams.
The scouting and screening programme is set to conclude on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
