Bassey, Iwobi shine as Fulham fall 3-2 to Chelsea in Premier League opener

Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi produced encouraging performances despite Fulham opening their 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at Craven Cottage. The Nigerian duo started the game as new Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa began his league tenure with a West London derby against Xabi Alonso's Chelsea.

Chelsea made the perfect start when João Pedro scored after just 31 seconds. Cole Palmer created the opening with a clever pass before Pedro lifted his finish over Bernd Leno. Fulham responded through Josh King in the 23rd minute, but Morgan Rogers restored Chelsea's advantage four minutes before half-time.

Palmer then extended Chelsea's lead four minutes into the second half. Gonzalo García reduced the deficit in the 54th minute after a mistake from Robert Sánchez, but Fulham could not find another equaliser. Chelsea held on to secure three points and give Alonso a winning start to his Premier League career.

Bassey provided one of the most positive signs for Fulham. The Super Eagles defender was named captain for the derby, giving him an early opportunity to demonstrate his leadership qualities under Arbeloa.

The Nigerian was heavily involved in Fulham's build-up and recorded 104 touches, the highest total in the match. He also had to deal with Chelsea's lively attacking trio of Pedro, Palmer and Rogers, who all found the net.

Bassey's responsibility is expected to increase this season following Issa Diop's departure. The defender has also been the subject of transfer interest, but his involvement as captain underlines his importance to Fulham's plans. His performance against Chelsea showed that he can offer both defensive experience and leadership as the new campaign develops.

Iwobi was also central to Fulham's approach. The Nigerian midfielder started alongside Sander Berge and operated in a deeper position, where he was heavily involved in possession and helped the home side move the ball from midfield.

Iwobi completed 83 passes at a 90 per cent accuracy rate and registered 103 touches. He also recorded 10 defensive contributions, highlighting the work he did without the ball as well as his influence during Fulham's possession phases.

The display could strengthen Iwobi's case for a regular role in Arbeloa's midfield. His ability to retain possession and contribute defensively gives the manager another option as Fulham adapt to a new tactical approach.

The defeat leaves Fulham without a point after the opening round of fixtures, while Chelsea take three points from the derby. The result also highlights the work Arbeloa must do at the back, with Fulham conceding three goals despite creating enough opportunities to remain competitive.

For Bassey and Iwobi, however, the individual performances offer encouragement. Fulham will now look to turn those positive signs into points when they continue their campaign.
