Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy has hit out at the decision to send off Super Eagles defender Gabriel Osho during their 2-0 Sky Bet League One defeat to Wycombe Wanderers at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.
The match turned on Osho's dismissal late in the first half, a moment that left Cardiff with ten men and significantly altered the balance of the contest. Cardiff lost the centre-back in the 43rd minute after referee Carl Brook showed him a straight red card for a challenge on Ewan Henderson near the centre circle.
Barry-Murphy was unconvinced by the severity of the call. "I felt as if we were in good control of the game. The sending off naturally changes a lot of the game, but the players' efforts were incredible," the Cardiff boss said. "I thought Gabriel tackled with one foot, his studs were close to the ground. It was a yellow card."
Osho had already felt aggrieved earlier in the game, having been clearly pulled to the floor off the ball without a penalty being awarded. His frustration deepened when the challenge on Henderson drew the straight red instead.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Cardiff refused to sit back. Barry-Murphy kept all his outfield players on the pitch, opting to continue attacking rather than shore up defensively. The Bluebirds created at least one clear opening in the second half, though they could not convert it.
Wycombe eventually made their numerical advantage count. Their breakthrough came in the 79th minute when André Vidigal finished clinically after a move assisted by Aaron Morley. Cauley Woodrow then doubled the lead five minutes later with a close-range finish, putting the result beyond doubt.
Barry-Murphy was also booked during the second half. He later clarified it was a misunderstanding, explaining that the referee mistakenly believed he was appealing for a yellow card against a Wycombe player.
Despite the loss, the Cardiff manager backed his defender's recent contributions. "I think he's been in great form. We saw on Saturday how important he is to the team. We're starting to really see the quality that he possesses and how important he is for our young team moving forward. It's just a small setback," Barry-Murphy said.
The defeat condemned Cardiff to back-to-back home losses and left them five points behind League One leaders Lincoln City. Wycombe, meanwhile, moved to within two points of the play-off places.
Osho, who joined Cardiff from AJ Auxerre last August, has not featured for the Super Eagles since earning his second international cap in an AFCON qualifier against Rwanda. The 27-year-old will now serve a suspension following Tuesday's dismissal, deepening Cardiff's defensive concerns as the promotion race enters its final stretch.
