Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has confirmed that Eric Garcia is fit enough to start against Atletico Madrid, while Andreas Christensen is also available for Sunday's crucial LaLiga encounter.
The announcement provides a significant boost for the Spanish champions, who have struggled with several defensive injuries this season. Both players are expected to travel with the squad to Madrid for the Matchday 12 showdown at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Barcelona currently lead the LaLiga standings, with second-placed Atletico Madrid sitting just two points behind them. Sunday's meeting could therefore have important implications for the title race.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Flick confirmed that Garcia and Christensen had recovered sufficiently to return to the squad, although he remained cautious about making a final decision on the former's involvement.
"I think Garcia is able to start, and both of them are in the squad for tomorrow, so they will travel with us to Atleti," Flick told reporters.
"I think Garcia can start; we will see if he starts."
Garcia's return is particularly important for Barcelona because of his versatility. The defender, who has been sidelined since suffering a thigh injury on October 17, can operate both as a centre-back and at right-back.
Christensen is also back in contention after spending several weeks recovering from a thigh problem sustained in mid-September.
Their availability should ease some of the defensive concerns facing Flick, who has recently relied on midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Brian Farinas to fill gaps in the backline.
However, Barcelona will remain without Jules Kounde and Xavi Espart for the Atletico encounter. Flick indicated that Kounde could be available again following the upcoming international break.
The Catalans have also suffered a setback in midfield, with Rodri Hernandez ruled out after sustaining a hamstring injury during Tuesday's Champions League victory over Aston Villa. The Spain international could be unavailable for approximately one month.
Flick has faced criticism over his decision to continue using Rodri before the injury, with questions raised about whether the midfielder should have received more rest.
The German coach, however, defended his management of the situation, insisting that he maintained regular communication with the player regarding his physical condition and workload.
"You always can do things better, but I think in this case, I totally communicate with this player and we manage everything, every minute he's on the pitch," Flick explained.
He acknowledged that injuries sometimes lead to questions about decisions made beforehand but maintained that both the coaching staff and player had been involved in managing his workload.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez is expected to be one of the major talking points ahead of the contest.
Barcelona attempted to sign the Argentine forward during the summer transfer window, but Atletico resisted the interest despite reports that the player was keen on the move.
Flick declined to comment on Alvarez's situation, preferring not to discuss players contracted to other clubs. Atletico manager Diego Simeone, meanwhile, expressed satisfaction with the striker's current condition ahead of the important fixture.
Barcelona have responded to their unsuccessful pursuit of Alvarez by deploying Brazilian forward Raphinha in a central attacking role, a tactical adjustment that has produced impressive results.
Raphinha has enjoyed an outstanding start to the campaign, registering 19 goals in 13 appearances across all competitions for the Catalan club.
Simeone was full of praise for the Brazilian, highlighting his work rate, pace, goalscoring ability and contribution to Barcelona's attacking play.
"For me he's an extraordinary player, he works hard, he's quick, he scores, he provides assists," the Atletico manager said.
He also praised Raphinha's performances from his new position, explaining that the Brazilian's versatility gives Barcelona additional attacking options.
With the league leaders looking to maintain their advantage at the top and Atletico eager to close the gap, Sunday's encounter promises to be a major test for both teams.
Barcelona will hope the return of Garcia and Christensen provides the defensive stability needed to secure a crucial result in the Spanish capital.
