After nearly two and a half years, Barcelona is set to return to the iconic Camp Nou this weekend. The Spanish champions announced that they will host Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, although the stadium is still undergoing renovations. In a statement, the club expressed its excitement, declaring, “We dreamed of coming back. And now she’s here. We went home. We are back at the Camp Nou.”
Renovation work on the stadium, which began in 2023, is ongoing. Currently, the lower two tiers of the stadium have been completed, but construction on the third tier and the roof remains in progress. Despite the unfinished work, Barcelona has received a permit from the local municipality to host matches with a limited capacity of 45,401 spectators. This marks a significant increase from the previous permit in October, which allowed only 25,991 fans—a number the club deemed insufficient for a financial return.
During the closure, Barcelona staged their home games at the city’s Olympic Stadium. The club also organized a test event in early November, attracting roughly 23,000 fans for an open training session at Camp Nou. With the new permit, Saturday’s match against Bilbao will kick off a busy home schedule, including a Champions League fixture against Chelsea and back-to-back La Liga games against Alaves and Atletico Madrid.
Uncertainty remains regarding the Champions League match against Eintracht Frankfurt on December 9, as UEFA regulations differ from those of the Spanish league when it comes to mid-season stadium changes. Barcelona president Joan Laporta, however, expressed confidence that all requirements can be met to host the match at Camp Nou.
When fully completed by 2027, the renovation is expected to increase the stadium’s capacity to 105,000 spectators, up from 99,000 before the renovation, solidifying Camp Nou’s status as one of the largest stadiums in Europe.
