Barcelona’s Unlikely Defense Powers Treble Dream in Remarkable Season

Posted : 01 May 2025

Barcelona is in the midst of a sensational season, chasing a historic treble despite a defense that seems cobbled together by fate. In their recent 4-1 victory over Trabzonspor in the Youth Champions League final, the club not only broke records but also reaffirmed its deep well of talent.

While their attack continues to dazzle, it’s the unorthodox and often ridiculed defensive line that has proven crucial in their run. This includes a mix of aged veterans, injury-prone youngsters, and a goalkeeper who came out of retirement to answer a desperate call.

At the center of this unexpected defensive success is Wojciech Szczesny. After retiring at the age of 34, the Polish goalkeeper was brought in following an injury to Marc-André ter Stegen. Initially seen as a temporary fix, Szczesny has become a mainstay, offering much-needed stability and calm.

Despite ter Stegen’s recovery, coach Hansi Flick has entrusted Szczesny to finish the European campaign, emphasizing his experience and composure. It remains uncertain whether he’ll stay on next season, but for now, he’s an integral part of Barcelona’s unlikely success story.

The defense also boasts Pau Kubarsi, an 18-year-old who shows maturity beyond his years. A product of the Catalan system, Kubarsi has become a symbol of dedication, rarely making mistakes and leading with poise.

Alongside him is Inigo Martinez, a long-time target of the club who finally arrived at 32 and has since proven to be a crucial figure. Once underestimated, Martinez has filled multiple roles and gained trust even over Ronald Araujo, who is now being considered for a big-money summer transfer.

Alejandro Balde, another La Masia gem, has battled constant injuries but remains a key figure when fit. With 10 assists this season, his blistering pace and technique are difficult to replace, though Gerard Martin will stand in during his absence.

Then there's Jules Koundé, who has thrived this season despite early discipline issues. Originally a center-back, Koundé has flourished in a full-back role, contributing decisively in attack and defense, including scoring the winning goal in the cup final.

Ultimately, what makes Barcelona’s backline remarkable isn’t its perfection but its unpredictability and resilience. Flick’s faith in this patchwork defense has paid off, with each player contributing uniquely to the team's progress.

Whether this unorthodox formula leads to a treble remains to be seen, but it has already produced a season filled with drama, surprises, and a renewed belief that even the most unlikely pieces can create a masterpiece.
