Barcelona midfield suffers double blow as De Jong, Pedri face extended absences

Posted : 04 March 2024

Barcelona faces a significant setback in their midfield as Frenkie de Jong and Pedri are set to miss crucial upcoming matches due to injuries. De Jong is expected to be sidelined for approximately a month after suffering an ankle ligament sprain during the goalless draw against Athletic Club.

Meanwhile, Pedri, dealing with a thigh problem, is undergoing recovery work, and his return is anticipated no earlier than April. The absence of both midfielders, coupled with Gavi's injury, leaves Barcelona short-handed during a crucial period in the season.

As Barcelona prepares for key fixtures, including the Champions League clash with Napoli and LaLiga match against Atlético Madrid, the absence of De Jong and Pedri adds to the challenges faced by coach Xavi Hernández.

The second leg against Napoli is scheduled for March 12, and Barcelona is navigating a tight race in LaLiga, currently eight points behind league leaders Real Madrid. The team is set to host Mallorca and face Atlético Madrid in the coming weeks, with important league positions at stake.

This injury setback is not unfamiliar for De Jong, who previously sprained his ankle earlier in the season, leading to a two-month absence. Pedri, with a history of various injuries, is taking a cautious approach to recovery.

Barcelona's midfield depth will be tested, with young players like Marc Casadó and Pau Prim joining the first-team training in the absence of key players. Xavi will need to rely on the remaining fit midfielders and potentially explore alternative options to navigate this challenging period.

Despite these setbacks, Barcelona must regroup quickly to maintain their ambitions in both domestic and European competitions, with pivotal matches on the horizon, including a potential Champions League quarterfinal and the LaLiga Clásico against Real Madrid in April.
