Hansi Flick enters his third season in charge of Barcelona with the club aiming to extend its recent domestic dominance while finally ending its long wait for another Champions League triumph. After securing consecutive LaLiga titles, the German coach must now oversee a reshaped squad and cope with a rejuvenated Real Madrid led by José Mourinho.
Barcelona's biggest summer addition is Rodri, who arrived from Manchester City on a contract running until 2030. The Spain international brings considerable experience and defensive stability to a midfield that has sometimes lacked control, while his arrival also represented a significant victory for Barcelona after Real Madrid had been interested in signing him.
Rodri's ability to dictate possession and protect the defence could be particularly important for Flick, whose Barcelona side has traditionally been prolific in attack but less convincing defensively. The midfielder also arrives with an impressive collection of major honours, including the Champions League, domestic titles and the Ballon d'Or.
The Catalan club has undergone further changes in attack. Robert Lewandowski has departed for Chicago Fire, while Ferran Torres has also left, creating a significant gap in terms of goals and experience. Barcelona have responded by bringing in Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, two quick attackers whose pace and pressing ability fit Flick's demanding style.
However, finding a replacement for Lewandowski remains one of Barcelona's biggest challenges. The club has explored several options for a new centre-forward, including Julián Álvarez, but securing a proven number nine has proved difficult. For now, Flick could rely on players such as Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Gordon, Adeyemi and Dani Olmo to share the scoring responsibility.
Yamal remains central to Barcelona's plans. The teenage forward has already established himself as one of the team's most influential players, and another consistently outstanding campaign from him could be crucial if Barcelona are to cope with the loss of established goalscorers.
The domestic challenge will also be tougher. Real Madrid have turned to Mourinho as they attempt to reclaim the Spanish title, bringing the Portuguese coach back to the club more than a decade after his first spell in charge. Madrid have also strengthened significantly, raising expectations that the battle for supremacy will be considerably closer this season.
Mourinho's return adds another layer to the rivalry between the two Spanish giants. The Portuguese manager is renowned for his ability to create pressure around major matches, and his tactical approach will present Flick with a different challenge from the coaches Barcelona have faced in recent seasons.
Barcelona's European ambitions are equally important. The club's last Champions League triumph came in 2015, and Rodri's arrival is viewed as part of an effort to add the experience and balance needed to compete with Europe's strongest teams.
Flick, meanwhile, has maintained confidence in his squad. With Rodri providing greater security in midfield, new attacking options adding pace and Yamal continuing to develop, Barcelona have plenty of reasons to believe they can retain their LaLiga crown. Yet Mourinho's return to Madrid ensures that achieving a third consecutive title will be far from straightforward.
