2026/2027 Euromatch NPFL Matchday 8: Barau FC Face Rangers Test as League Leaders Seek to Consolidate Top Spot

Posted : 10 October 2026

Barau FC will seek to restore their confidence when they face league leaders Rangers International in a Matchday 8 fixture of the 2026/2027 Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Sunday.

The encounter presents a significant test for the Kano-based side, whose unbeaten start to the campaign ended abruptly with a 4-1 defeat to Bendel Insurance in Benin on October 4.

Before that setback, the Maliya Boys had gone six league matches without defeat, recording three victories and three draws to establish themselves among the early-season contenders.

Their impressive run included victories over Nasarawa United, Ranchers Bees and Abia Warriors, alongside draws against Kun Khalifat, Ikorodu City and Sporting Lagos.

The defeat in Benin, however, exposed defensive vulnerabilities that the Eugene Agagbe-tutored side must address quickly against a Rangers team boasting considerable attacking quality.

The Flying Antelopes, meanwhile, arrive in Kano following a 3-1 victory over Abia Warriors in the Southeast derby, a result that kept the defending champions at the top of the table with 16 points from seven matches.

Godwin Obaje, Chidiebere Nwobodo and Akorode Daniel were all on target in that encounter.

Rangers have demonstrated their ability to grind out results both at home and away, making them formidable opponents for Barau as the hosts attempt to recover from their first major setback of the season.

The Enugu-based side’s recent league form includes victories over Ranchers Bees and Warri Wolves. However, their 2-0 defeat to Ikorodu City on September 27 showed that they can be vulnerable when opponents disrupt their rhythm.

For Barau, the priority will be to tighten their defence, respond more effectively to pressure and make better use of scoring opportunities.

Playing in front of their home supporters could provide the encouragement needed to challenge the league leaders and get their campaign back on track.

The visitors, meanwhile, must balance the immediate demands of the title race with preparations for their forthcoming CAF Champions League assignment against Algeria’s MC Alger.

Rangers are scheduled to host MC Alger in the first leg of their continental tie on October 18 before travelling for the return fixture on October 23.

That demanding schedule adds significance to Sunday’s encounter, as the Enugu club will be keen to maintain their domestic momentum before turning their attention to continental competition.

Nevertheless, Rangers cannot afford to underestimate Barau, who will be eager to prove that their heavy defeat in Benin was an isolated setback rather than the beginning of a decline.

With the hosts seeking redemption and the visitors determined to protect their position at the summit, the encounter at the Sani Abacha Stadium promises to be a compelling contest between a side looking to bounce back and a title contender aiming to sustain its winning momentum.
