Chekas United FC have emerged champions of the 2026 Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Badagry divisional qualifiers after defeating debutants Smiller All Champions FC in a dramatic penalty shootout, with three teams securing tickets to the state finals.
The weekend tournament, held at the Honourable Lukman Olumoh Sports Complex in Awori-Ora, Ajegunle, featured eight teams competing for three available qualification spots to the state championship later in the year.
Chekas United, who finished as runners-up in last year’s Badagry qualifiers, went one step further this time after playing out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Smiller All Champions FC in regulation time. They eventually held their nerve to win the penalty shootout on sudden death and claim the divisional title.
Despite being debutants, Smiller All Champions FC impressed throughout the competition, finishing as runners-up and also securing qualification for the state finals.
The third-place playoff also delivered excitement, as Emaljus FC defeated defending Badagry champions All Saints FC 2-1 to claim the final qualification spot and end All Saints’ reign as divisional champions.
Chekas United received a cash prize of ₦500,000 for their victory, while Smiller All Champions earned ₦300,000. Emaljus FC collected ₦100,000, with all three teams advancing to the state championship.
Although All Saints FC failed to qualify, their striker Moses Obi was named the tournament’s top scorer and received a ₦50,000 cash award.
Speaking after the tournament, Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer spokesperson Victor Ottah praised the quality of football on display and the strong fan engagement throughout the competition.
“The Badagry division truly lived up to expectations. We witnessed quality football, determination and incredible support from the fans. It was a fantastic spectacle, and we expect even more excitement when the qualifiers move to Ikeja,” Ottah said.
Brand ambassador Chukwudi Ezugwu also commended tournament founder Dr. Bankole Allibay for creating a platform that promotes grassroots football and provides opportunities for young players to develop their talents.
The qualifying series now moves to Ikeja, where another eight teams will compete for remaining slots in the state championship ahead of the main tournament scheduled for November.
