Azam FC Joins Race to Sign Super Eagles Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali Following Chippa United Exit

Posted : 28 April 2026

The race for Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has intensified as Tanzanian side Azam FC reportedly entered the frame to secure his signature. The 29-year-old shot-stopper has been without a club since February 2026 after a surprising decision to terminate his contract with South African outfit Chippa United. Despite being a key figure and captain for the Chilli Boys, Nwabali opted for a mutual exit midway through the season to seek a new challenge.

Azam FC now aims to rival fellow Tanzanian powerhouse Simba SC for the Nigerian international. Both clubs are financially equipped to meet the goalkeeper’s expectations as they look to strengthen their squads for continental competitions. Simba SC has long been linked with Nwabali, with reports suggesting they view him as a primary target to bolster their defensive line. However, Azam FC’s entry into the negotiations adds a new layer of competition in the East African market.

In South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs remains a significant admirer of the former Enyimba man. Former Nigerian goalkeeper Peterside Idah recently backed a move to the "Glamour Boys," noting that the club has the financial muscle to make Nwabali the highest-paid goalkeeper in the league. Despite this interest, no formal agreement has been reached with the Soweto giants. The goalkeeper’s status as a free agent makes him an attractive prospect, yet he has had to train individually to maintain fitness while awaiting a concrete offer.

Nwabali’s rise to prominence followed a stellar campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he solidified his spot as Nigeria’s number one. His absence from the recent international break raised eyebrows, but experts believe his quality remains undisputed among Africa’s elite clubs. The goalkeeper had previously been linked with moves to Europe and Saudi Arabia, though those links cooled following his departure from South Africa.

With the current transfer windows closed in many regions, a final decision on his destination is expected during the summer window. Azam FC, who last won the Tanzanian league title in the 2013/14 season, views Nwabali as a statement signing to restore their dominance. Nigerian football fans are now watching closely to see if their star keeper will choose the emerging project in Tanzania or return to the South African top flight.
