Ayase Ueda Scores on Lille Debut to Send Club Top of Ligue 1

Ayase Ueda made an immediate impact for Lille, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory away to Toulouse on Thursday. The Japanese striker, who had joined the French club just three days earlier, came off the bench to secure three points that temporarily moved Lille to the top of the Ligue 1 standings.

The match was brought forward because Lille are scheduled to begin their Champions League campaign against Real Betis on Tuesday. Despite Toulouse controlling large portions of the contest and creating several promising opportunities, Lille remained in the game before Ueda produced the breakthrough in the 73rd minute.

Ueda entered the match in the 57th minute as a replacement for veteran striker Olivier Giroud. Just 16 minutes later, he reacted quickest inside the penalty area following a Romain Perraud delivery and headed the ball into the net to register his first goal for Lille.

The 28-year-old arrived from Feyenoord after an outstanding season in the Netherlands, where he scored 25 league goals in 31 appearances. Lille reportedly paid €15 million for the forward as they strengthened their attack ahead of a demanding domestic and European campaign.

Lille's victory was also built on a superb display from goalkeeper Berke Özer. The Turkish international made a series of important saves as Toulouse threatened to equalise, while the hosts also struck the woodwork. Lille ultimately held on to claim their second win of the campaign and remain unbeaten after three league matches.

The result gives new Lille manager Davide Ancelotti seven points from his opening three Ligue 1 matches. His team began the campaign with a win at Angers before drawing 2-2 with Paris Saint-Germain after surrendering a two-goal advantage late in the match.

Lille will now turn their attention to Europe, with Real Betis awaiting them in their Champions League opener at the Decathlon Arena – Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Tuesday.
