2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 5: Aweroro Relieved as Shooting Stars Secure First Win

Posted : 22 September 2025

Under-fire Shooting Stars SC coach, Nurudeen Aweroro, finally breathed a sigh of relief after guiding his team to their first victory of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, following four successive matches without a win.

The Oluyole Warriors secured the much-needed breakthrough with a 2-1 triumph over visiting Kun Khalifat FC of Owerri at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, in their Match Day 5 encounter.

Speaking after the match, Aweroro assured fans that the result would mark the beginning of a winning run for Shooting Stars, promising to fulfill the club’s season ambitions.

“My team had to fight hard to hold on to the slender win after the visitors pulled one back in the second half. It was not an easy victory,” he said.

Skipper Ghali Falke opened the scoring for Shooting Stars in the 7th minute, before Sodiq Ibrahim doubled the lead, sending the hosts into halftime with a 2-0 advantage. Kun Khalifat, however, pulled one back through Ezeoye with 15 minutes left on the clock, but the Ibadan side stood firm to secure their first win of the season.

Reflecting on the result, Aweroro expressed happiness at finally breaking the winless run, though he admitted he did not expect the first victory to come as late as week five. He emphasized that past mistakes had taught the team valuable lessons to approach future matches with greater focus.

“Today’s win will give the boys the confidence and motivation we need. We believe this result will boost us to perform better in upcoming matches, both home and away,” he added.

While disappointed by the defensive lapse that led to Kun Khalifat’s goal, Aweroro noted that poor communication at the back remains an issue but assured fans that improvements will be made in defense ahead of their next fixture.
