Australia Secures Comfortable 2-0 Victory Over Turkiye in 2026 FIFA World Cup Opener

Posted : 14 June 2026

The Australian men's national football team opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dominant victory on Sunday. The Socceroos defeated Turkiye 2-0 in their opening Group D fixture at the BC Place stadium in Vancouver. Head coach Tony Popovic praised his team's disciplined tactical structure after the final whistle.

The oceania powerhouse found their rhythm early in the first half against the European side. Sensation youngster Nestory Irankunda broke the deadlock in the 26th minute to hand his nation a deserved lead. The goal came after a swift counter-attacking move cut through the Turkish defensive line.

Turkiye attempted to fight back after the halftime interval by controlling the tempo through long periods of possession. However, the organized Australian defense restricted their opponents from creating clear scoring opportunities. Center-back Harry Souttar marshaled the backline effectively to protect the narrow advantage.

The Socceroos doubled their lead in the 75th minute when midfielder Connor Metcalfe found the back of the net. The clinical finish deflated the Turkish side and guaranteed all three points for Australia. The result places the team in a strong position within Group D alongside rivals from the United States and Paraguay.

With this victory, Australia sits comfortably at the top of the early group standings with three points. Turkiye remains without a single point and faces immense pressure ahead of their next tournament fixture. Both nations are fighting to finish among the top two places to advance into the knockout rounds.

Australia will look to maintain this winning momentum when they face the United States on June 19. Meanwhile, Turkiye must secure a positive result against Paraguay on the same day to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
