Augsburg decides on Brentford's first Premier League signing, Onyeka

Posted : 09 April 2025

Augsburg, a club in the German Bundesliga, has made a decision regarding the future of midfielder Frank Onyeka. The Nigerian international is currently on loan at Augsburg after a move from Brentford in the summer of 2024.

Onyeka had initially joined Brentford in July 2021 for a club-record fee of ten million euros. This move marked the first signing for Brentford in the Premier League era. However, after struggling to secure regular playing time, he sought a move that would provide more opportunities on the pitch.

In search of more consistent game time, Onyeka made the switch to Augsburg on a season-long loan. The 27-year-old was eager to feature in more matches and prove his abilities as a regular starter. Augsburg offered him the chance to do so, and he has since become a key player for the club.

Sky Sport Germany’s transfer market expert, Florian Plettenberg, has reported that Onyeka is expected to return to Brentford at the end of the current loan spell. There are no active discussions concerning a permanent transfer, and his loan agreement is set to end following the 2024-2025 season.

At Augsburg, Onyeka has enjoyed a strong run in the starting lineup. Out of the 28 matches he was eligible for selection, he started 27 of them, contributing to the team with two goal involvements. His consistent presence on the field has demonstrated his importance to the Bundesliga club.

Before leaving for Augsburg, Onyeka signed a four-year extension with Brentford in August 2023. The new contract includes an option for an additional 12 months, ensuring that he remains under contract with the Bees for the foreseeable future, even if he returns after his loan spell.

Since his arrival at Brentford, Onyeka has made 78 appearances, scoring one goal and providing four assists. His time at the club has been marked by significant growth, but he now looks to continue his development at Augsburg while preparing for his potential return to the Premier League.
