Atletico Madrid Secure 2-0 Victory Over Real Betis

Posted : 28 October 2025
Atletico Madrid bounced back from their Champions League loss to Arsenal, moving up to fourth in La Liga.

Atletico Madrid produced a composed and efficient performance to defeat Real Betis 2-0 on Monday night, climbing back into the La Liga top four. The result comes just days after their heavy 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League, showing a strong response from Diego Simeone’s men.

Playing at the La Cartuja Stadium, where Real Betis are temporarily hosting their home matches, Atletico managed to secure only their second clean sheet in nine games and their first away victory of the season. The visitors looked sharp and confident from the start, displaying the discipline and intensity typical of a Simeone-coached side.

It was a family affair for Atletico, as Giuliano Simeone — son of head coach Diego Simeone — opened the scoring early on with a composed finish from the edge of the penalty area. The visitors continued to push forward, and summer signing Alex Baena doubled the lead just before halftime with a beautifully curled effort, marking his first goal for the club.

In the second half, Real Betis rallied and created several chances, coming closest through Abde Ezzalzouli’s powerful free-kick that rattled the crossbar.

However, Atletico’s defense, led by Jan Oblak, held firm to preserve the clean sheet. The Slovenian goalkeeper praised his team’s resilience after the match, saying, “This was an important and hard-fought win. Everyone gave their best, and we need to keep playing like this, especially away from home.”

Despite the victory, Atletico Madrid remain eight points behind league leaders Real Madrid, though they are still the only team to have beaten their city rivals this season. Meanwhile, Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis dropped to sixth place, three points behind Atletico.

Reflecting on the defeat, Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso admitted his team lacked sharpness in attack. “We worked hard and kept trying until the end, but we needed to be more clinical,” he said. “Our fans were amazing even on a rainy Monday night, and we owe it to them to bounce back quickly.”

Atletico’s win not only restores confidence after their European disappointment but also strengthens their position in the race for a top-four finish in La Liga.
