Atletico Madrid began their LaLiga campaign with a 2-0 victory over promoted Malaga, with Kang-In Lee and Alex Baena scoring stunning second-half goals.
Diego Simeone’s team had to be patient against a well-organised Malaga side that kept the game scoreless during a tight first half. Atletico were also without Argentina striker Julian Alvarez, who is still building his fitness after his post-World Cup break.
Simeone introduced Lee, Baena and his son Giuliano before the hour mark, and the changes quickly gave Atletico more attacking momentum. Lee opened the scoring in the 70th minute after collecting the ball on the right before cutting inside and curling an excellent effort into the far corner.
The goal marked a dream start for Lee at the Metropolitano following his summer move from Paris Saint-Germain. The South Korean has also taken the number seven shirt previously worn by Atletico icon Antoine Griezmann, who recently moved to Orlando City.
Atletico continued pushing for a second goal, with Ademola Lookman and David Hancko both coming close. Their pressure finally paid off five minutes from full time when Baena produced another moment of quality.
The Spanish international curled a superb free-kick over the wall and into the net via the underside of the crossbar to secure all three points for Atletico.
Atletico, who finished fourth last season, will face Villarreal on Sunday in their next league fixture. Real Madrid and Barcelona will also begin their campaigns this weekend, with Madrid visiting Espanyol on Saturday and Barcelona travelling to Elche on Sunday.
