Atlético Madrid Hold Talks to Sign Tottenham Captain Cristian Romero

Atlético Madrid have opened discussions with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential transfer for captain Cristian Romero, with the Spanish club renewing their long-standing interest in the Argentina international. Romero is increasingly expected to leave Spurs this summer despite signing a contract extension last year.

The 28-year-old has also attracted interest from Inter Milan, but Atlético are now pushing to secure his signature. Reports indicate that Romero has agreed personal terms with the Madrid club, while negotiations between Atlético and Tottenham over the transfer fee are still ongoing.

Romero has been a key figure for Tottenham since joining from Atalanta and was appointed club captain. However, after a difficult campaign that included injuries and two red cards, Spurs appear prepared to sanction his departure as they continue reshaping their squad under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham have already strengthened their defensive options this summer, while fellow centre-back Micky van de Ven is reportedly close to signing a new five-year contract. Those developments could further pave the way for Romero to leave north London, with Atlético currently emerging as his preferred destination.
