Atlético Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Mallorca in LaLiga on Saturday, marking Diego Simeone’s 500th match as the club’s manager in Spain’s top flight. Samuel Lino opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a precise low shot into the far corner, giving the hosts an early advantage.
Antoine Griezmann sealed the win in stoppage time, executing a stunning lob over Mallorca’s goalkeeper Dominik Greif. The result helped Atlético return to winning ways after a brief slump in league form.
The Madrid side entered the match on the back of a convincing 4-1 victory over Salzburg that secured their progression to the Champions League knockout rounds. However, in LaLiga, they had struggled in their last two outings.
With this win, Atlético climbed to second place in the standings with 48 points, just one behind league leaders Real Madrid, who were set to play Espanyol later in the day. The result also set the stage for an eagerly awaited Madrid derby the following weekend at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Mallorca, last season’s Copa del Rey finalists, endured another disappointing outing, extending their losing streak across all competitions to five matches. Despite a promising start, the visitors struggled to match Atlético’s intensity, particularly in attack.
Lino’s goal came from a well-worked play initiated by Giuliano Simeone, while Greif was forced into a crucial save before halftime to keep his team in the contest. However, Mallorca failed to register a shot on target in the first half, highlighting their offensive struggles.
The visitors showed some improvement after the break, with Sergi Darder and Dani Rodríguez creating a few nervous moments for Atlético’s defense. However, their resurgence was short-lived, and Griezmann came close to doubling the lead midway through the second half, narrowly missing a cross from Robin Le Normand.
The Frenchman eventually found the net with a clever chipped finish after Rodrigo Riquelme had earlier struck the crossbar from a free kick. Griezmann’s goal ended his LaLiga drought dating back to December, while Mallorca’s scoring struggles continued, leaving them winless and goalless in 2025.
