Atlético Madrid Cruise Past Osasuna 4-0 Ahead of Real Madrid Derby

Atlético Madrid strengthened their position in the La Liga top four with a commanding 4-0 victory over Osasuna on Wednesday, September 16, moving third in the standings and gaining momentum ahead of Sunday’s Madrid derby against Real Madrid.

Jonathan David, Lee Kang-in, Robin Le Normand and Álex Baena were all on target as Diego Simeone’s side produced a dominant display at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. The result moved Atlético onto 13 points from six matches, level with fourth-placed Sevilla and two points behind leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Atlético entered the game without the injured Julián Álvarez, but David stepped up once again. The Canadian striker scored his second goal in as many matches after opening his Atlético account in the previous weekend’s victory over Real Sociedad.

The hosts made a lively start, with Ademola Lookman and Lee both threatening the Osasuna defence. At the other end, Jan Oblak was forced into an important intervention to deny Raúl García as the visitors looked for a way through.

David eventually broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. After his initial effort was saved by Aitor Fernández following a promising move involving Alejandro Grimaldo, the striker reacted quickest to the rebound and fired Atlético in front.

Atlético continued to control the match after taking the lead, while Osasuna goalkeeper Fernández produced several saves to keep his team within touching distance.

The second goal arrived shortly after the interval. David turned provider this time, setting up Lee Kang-in, who finished into the bottom corner to double Atlético’s advantage in the 54th minute.

Le Normand added a third in the 62nd minute after Atlético capitalised on a corner that Osasuna failed to clear. The defender reacted decisively inside the area to put the hosts firmly in control.

Baena completed the scoring in the 82nd minute after Johnny Cardoso supplied an excellent pass. The playmaker calmly finished the move to cap an impressive attacking performance from Atlético.

The victory gives Simeone’s team two consecutive league wins after a difficult spell that included defeats by Athletic Bilbao and Liverpool. The result also provides a significant boost before Sunday’s derby against Real Madrid.

Elsewhere, Sevilla moved level with Atlético on 13 points after defeating Deportivo La Coruña 1-0 at the Abanca-Riazor. Miguel Sierra scored the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute, while Deportivo were reduced to 10 men after Angeliño was sent off following a VAR review.

Barcelona remain top of La Liga with a perfect record after five matches, while Real Madrid are second on 15 points following their 3-2 victory over Elche on Tuesday. Atlético’s win leaves them third with 13 points.
