Athletic Club have confirmed the appointment of German coach Edin Terzic as their new head coach on a two-year contract. The 43-year-old is set to officially take charge at the start of next season and will be formally presented by the Basque club in the coming months.
Terzic replaces long-serving manager Ernesto Valverde, who announced in March that he would step down at the end of the current campaign after four years in charge. His departure marks the end of a stable period for Athletic Club as they prepare for a new managerial era.
The club had also been linked with Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, who confirmed he will leave his Premier League role this summer, but Athletic ultimately opted for Terzic’s experience in European competition.
Terzic arrives with a strong résumé from his time at Borussia Dortmund, where he had two spells in charge. During his tenure, he guided the team to a German Cup victory in 2021, narrowly missed out on the Bundesliga title in 2023, and reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2024.
Following that European final defeat to Real Madrid, Terzic stepped away from Dortmund and had not taken another managerial role until agreeing to join Athletic Club. His previous coaching experience also includes assistant roles at Besiktas and West Ham under Slaven Bilic.
Athletic Club currently sit eighth in La Liga with four matches remaining in the season, as the club looks ahead to a new chapter under Terzic’s leadership.
