Atalanta coach shares Lookman's verdict after Monza goal

Posted : 07 May 2025

Atalanta's head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of Ademola Lookman in the first half of their 4-0 victory over Monza last weekend. Despite a strong second half showing, Gasperini was critical of the Super Eagles forward's initial performance. Lookman, who had been goalless in his last eight matches dating back to March, had struggled to find the net.

The first half saw Charles De Ketelaere score a brace, which calmed any early nerves for the team and gave Atalanta a solid lead. However, Lookman found his stride after the break, scoring his 14th goal of the season just two minutes into the second half, helping to seal the victory. Despite his improvement, Gasperini admitted he was not entirely satisfied with Lookman's first-half display.

“De Ketelaere was very impressive in the first half,” Gasperini said. “He had a great start. Lookman showed more in the second half, but I wasn’t too happy with his first-half performance.” The coach's comments highlight the importance he places on consistency, as he expects a high level of performance throughout the match.

In his remarks, Gasperini also praised goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, who made some crucial saves during the game, particularly in the first half and at the end. He emphasized the need for the team to remain focused, especially as they approach the final stages of the season. “We can’t afford to lose focus,” the coach stated. “We’re very close to our goal, and we need the enthusiasm to keep flying and reach another important milestone.”

As Atalanta pushes towards their objective of qualifying for the Champions League, Gasperini stressed that lapses in concentration could hinder their progress. With just three Serie A matches remaining, the team sits third in the league, five points ahead of Juventus. The Italian coach is determined to maintain the momentum to secure a direct spot in next season's prestigious European competition.

Lookman’s performance in the second half of the match demonstrated his potential to impact games, even when not at his best initially. This bodes well for Atalanta as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures. Gasperini will be hoping for continued improvement from the Nigerian forward as they fight to maintain their position near the top of the Serie A table.

With the season drawing to a close, Gasperini’s focus remains on ensuring that Atalanta finishes strong. Their upcoming matches will be crucial in determining whether they can hold onto their Champions League qualification spot and achieve their goal of competing in Europe’s elite competition next season.
