Aston Villa’s Champions League Dreams End After Controversial Loss to Manchester United

Posted : 25 May 2025

Aston Villa’s hopes of securing a Champions League spot were dashed following a controversial match against Manchester United, where goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was sent off and a goal was disallowed. Despite Newcastle’s 1-0 loss to Everton, 10-man Villa appeared poised to claim a place in Europe’s top competition until Amad Diallo scored a late header from Bruno Fernandes’ assist in the 76th minute.

Just before that, Villa thought they had taken the lead through Morgan Rogers, but the goal was ruled out after the referee blew the whistle, believing Rogers had kicked the ball out of goalkeeper Altay Bayindir’s hands, preventing VAR from reviewing the decision.

The Villa manager, Unai Emery, expressed strong frustration at the referee’s call and later at a late penalty awarded to Manchester United after Ian Maatsen fouled Diallo. Christian Eriksen, who will be leaving Old Trafford this summer, converted the penalty to secure a 2-0 win for the home side.

This defeat means Villa, who reached the Champions League quarter-finals this season, will now compete in the Europa League next term. The match turned further against Villa when they were reduced to 10 men late in the first half.

The sending off came when Martinez rushed out of his penalty area to stop Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund, who was chasing an underhit backpass from Villa’s Matty Cash. Martinez’s challenge on Hojlund resulted in a red card, forcing Villa to replace an attacking player with substitute goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

The Argentine World Cup winner had been emotional after their recent victory over Tottenham, sparking rumors about his future at the club, with many speculating that he may leave Villa in the summer regardless of the outcome.
