Aston Villa maintained their impressive form in the Europa League with a 2-1 victory over Basel on Thursday, marking their eighth consecutive win across all competitions. Evann Guessand gave Villa the lead in Switzerland, but Basel responded when Flavius Daniliuc converted Xherdan Shaqiri's well-delivered free-kick.
Villa regained control early in the second half, with Youri Tielemans scoring from just outside the box to secure the win. Under Unai Emery, Villa have now won 14 of their last 16 matches in all competitions and sit third in the Europa League group with 15 points, guaranteed at least a play-off place and narrowly trailing Lyon and Midtjylland on goal difference.
Nottingham Forest also enjoyed European success, recording a 2-1 away win at Utrecht. Arnaud Kalimuendo opened the scoring shortly after the break, but the Dutch side equalised through a header by Mike van der Hoorn. Igor Jesus scored the decisive goal just two minutes from time, giving Forest their first European away victory since 1995 and keeping them two points shy of the top eight. Forest manager Sean Dyche praised his players, stating, “I'm very pleased with the players and the result, and long may it continue. I'm pleased for everyone concerned.”
In contrast, Celtic endured a heavy 3-0 defeat at home to Roma, marking the first two losses for manager Wilfried Nancy. An early own goal by Liam Scales gave the Italian side the lead, while on-loan striker Evan Ferguson added a first-half brace to seal the victory. Rangers also faced disappointment, losing 2-1 to Ferencvaros in Budapest. Bojan Miovski initially put Rangers ahead, but Barnabas Varga’s second-half strike handed the Hungarian side the win, leaving Rangers with just one point from six games.
Elsewhere in the Europa League, Lyon secured a 2-1 home win over Go Ahead Eagles to stay above Midtjylland, who won 1-0 against Genk, keeping the competition tightly contested at the top of the group standings.
