Aston Villa Look to Ignite Season Against Club Brugge in Champions League

Aston Villa head into their Champions League opener against Club Brugge searching for their first Premier League goal after a difficult start to the campaign.

Unai Emery's side have endured a frustrating opening to the new season, collecting just one point from their first three Premier League matches and failing to score. Their goalless draw against Hull City on Saturday left Villa still searching for an attacking breakthrough.

The slow start is not entirely unfamiliar territory for Emery. Villa also struggled to find their rhythm at the beginning of the previous campaign before producing a dramatic turnaround and eventually lifting the Europa League in Istanbul.

However, Emery has had to oversee a major rebuild during the summer. Nine players departed, including Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers, while the club brought in a host of new faces as they reshaped the squad.

Nicolas Jackson has arrived to strengthen the attack following Watkins' departure, while Alejandro Garnacho and Ibrahim Mbaye are among the other additions expected to provide more attacking options. UEFA's Champions League squad includes all three forwards.

Villa now have an immediate opportunity to change the mood when they visit Club Brugge on Tuesday. The Belgian champions are familiar opponents, having faced Villa three times during the 2024-25 Champions League campaign.

This is Villa's second Champions League campaign. They reached the quarter-finals on their debut before losing to eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain, and they return to Europe's elite competition after winning the Europa League last season.

For Emery, the challenge is to make his revamped attack click quickly. With the Champions League providing a fresh stage, Villa will hope their European campaign can become the catalyst for another revival.
