Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala found the back of the net for Al Hilal Women but could not prevent her side from falling to a painful 3-2 extra-time defeat against bitter rivals Al Nassr Women in the Saudi Women’s Cup final. The high-stakes Riyadh derby delivered immense drama for the fans.
Al Hilal took the initiative just before the halftime whistle. Portuguese winger Jéssica Silva produced a brilliant left-footed curled finish into the bottom corner following an intelligent pass from teammate Fatimah Mansour. Oshoala had nearly opened the scoring minutes prior, but her powerful header narrowly cleared the crossbar.
Al Nassr fought back aggressively in the second period. Tanzanian international Clara Luvanga grabbed a dramatic equalizer in the 86th minute from close range to push the match into extra time. Luvanga then completely dominated the extra periods by scoring twice more in the 97th and 105th minutes to seal a spectacular hat-trick.
Oshoala tried desperately to launch a late comeback for Al Hilal. The six-time African Footballer of the Year won a late penalty after being fouled inside the box and calmly converted it herself. Despite her late heroics, Al Nassr held their defensive shape until the final whistle to secure the trophy.
The loss marks a difficult end to the season for Al Hilal against their local rivals. Al Nassr have completely dominated the domestic landscape this campaign, having previously beaten Al Hilal in the Premier Challenge Cup final alongside clinching the Saudi Women’s Premier League title.
Oshoala ends her impressive debut season in Saudi Arabia with a remarkable 30 goal contributions. The Nigerian forward racked up 24 goals and six assists across all competitions while scoring in five consecutive matches to close out the year.
