Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo could leave Wrexham this summer after the club opened the door for his departure. The 24-year-old is facing increased competition for the No.1 position after Wrexham strengthened their goalkeeping department.
Okonkwo was left out of Wrexham's squad for their Championship opener against Cardiff City. The match ended 1-1, while Okonkwo had also been among the substitutes for the club's recent Carabao Cup defeat by Middlesbrough.
The situation has reportedly attracted interest from Championship clubs. Charlton Athletic are understood to be among the clubs monitoring the goalkeeper, while Leicester City have also made enquiries about his availability.
Okonkwo has strong experience in the Championship. He made 39 league starts for Wrexham during the 2025/26 campaign and recorded 10 clean sheets, underlining his importance during the club's first season at that level.
The Nigerian also produced important performances against clubs now linked with his future. He kept a clean sheet in Wrexham's 1-0 victory away to Charlton in February, making one save during the match. He also started Wrexham's 1-1 draw with Leicester City in January.
Wrexham's goalkeeping options have since changed. The club have Danny Ward, who previously played for Leicester City, while the arrival of Anthony Patterson has further increased competition for the position. Patterson's reported £8 million move from Sunderland has added another established option for manager Phil Parkinson.
Okonkwo's contract situation is another important factor. He entered the final year of his Wrexham deal this summer, leaving the club with a decision over whether to extend his contract or consider a transfer. A departure could allow Wrexham to receive a fee rather than risk losing him as a free agent.
The goalkeeper joined Wrexham permanently in 2024 after initially spending time at the club on loan from Arsenal. He played an important role as the Welsh side secured successive promotions from the National League to League Two, then League One and eventually the Championship.
His career also received a major international boost this year. Okonkwo switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria and subsequently made his senior debut for the Super Eagles.
A move to Charlton could offer Okonkwo another opportunity to compete for regular Championship football. Leicester's reported interest would provide another option, although the immediate priority for the goalkeeper is likely to be securing a club where he can play consistently.
With the new season already underway, Okonkwo's future at Wrexham is now one of the key transfer situations to watch. His performances, Championship experience and Nigeria status could make him an attractive option for clubs looking for an experienced goalkeeper.
