Arteta Warns Arsenal Teenager Dowman: 'We Are Not in Disneyland' After Red Card

Posted : 31 October 2026

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has warned teenage forward Max Dowman that professional football demands discipline and emotional control after his controversial red card against Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup.

The 16-year-old was sent off in the 85th minute of Tuesday's encounter after reacting to a heavy challenge from Fleetwood defender Harrison Neal. Arsenal subsequently lost the fourth-round tie on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Arteta appeared visibly frustrated as Dowman walked towards the tunnel following his dismissal. The manager addressed the incident publicly for the first time on Friday, October 30, explaining that he had already warned the youngster about handling physical challenges before the match.

The Spanish manager also defended his touchline reaction, pointing to his relationship with Dowman and the conversation they had before the game.

"I haven't seen the reaction to my reaction, whether it is positive or negative. But you need to understand the context and the relationship that I have with him and what we discussed just before we went out," Arteta said.

He confirmed that he had spoken with the teenager on Thursday and insisted there were no problems between them.

However, Arteta stressed that protecting a young player does not mean shielding him from the expectations of elite football.

"This is the environment and this is the reality. Otherwise, we are in Disneyland. We are not in Disneyland. We are in the Premier League and this level," he warned.

Arteta added that Dowman would be held to the same standards as his senior team-mates. He explained that every player must earn the right to feature, regardless of age or reputation.

"We look after him so much that you cannot imagine. But at the same time, we are going to demand from him, like everybody else, because he needs to earn the right to play," the Arsenal manager stated.

The incident was not Dowman's first disciplinary setback this month. He was also sent off while representing England Under-19s in a match against the United States after struggling to manage physical challenges from opponents.

Arteta believes the attention Dowman attracts because of his playing style will continue to expose him to aggressive defending. He wants the teenager to develop the discipline required to deal with such situations.

Meanwhile, Arsenal's attempt to overturn the red card was unsuccessful. An independent Football Association commission rejected the club's appeal against both the dismissal and the three-match suspension.

Dowman will therefore miss Arsenal's Premier League trip to Liverpool, their home meeting with Hull City and the away fixture against Newcastle United.

Arteta expressed disappointment with the decision, arguing that the teenager's reaction was minimal compared with the challenge that preceded it.

He also suggested that Dowman was fortunate to escape a more serious injury, saying Arsenal were lucky he had not suffered a broken foot.

The suspension represents another setback for Arsenal as they prepare for an important run of Premier League fixtures. However, Arteta's message remains clear: Dowman's potential will not exempt him from the discipline and accountability expected at the highest level.
