Arteta Urges Arsenal to Produce “Something Special” in Paris After PSG Defeat

Posted : 30 April 2025

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged that his team will need a remarkable performance in the second leg to overturn a 1-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semifinal. The Gunners struggled in the opening stages of the match, conceding early to Ousmane Dembele.

Despite gaining momentum later in the game, Arsenal failed to find an equaliser, with a disallowed goal by Mikel Merino and several saves from PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma keeping them at bay.

Speaking after the match, Arteta stressed that the tie is only halfway through and expressed confidence in his side’s ability to bounce back. Drawing parallels to their previous win over Real Madrid, he emphasized the need to rise to the occasion in Paris.

He praised both teams’ quality, noting that PSG’s clinical finishing and standout goalkeeping made the difference on the night. Arteta reiterated that to reach the final, Arsenal must deliver an exceptional performance in the return leg.

This was Arsenal's first Champions League semifinal appearance since 2009, and they are chasing a second-ever final appearance, having last reached that stage in 2006. With their Premier League title hopes diminished, the Champions League represents their final shot at silverware this season.

Arteta, reflecting on the stakes, said his team still has a strong chance and must rise to the occasion in Paris if they want to achieve something truly special.
