Mikel Arteta praised the mentality of Gabriel Magalhães and Ezri Konsa after the two defenders scored in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory, which lifted the Gunners level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Konsa opened the scoring from close range early in Saturday’s match at the Emirates Stadium, while Gabriel sealed the win with a header midway through the second half.
The result allowed Arsenal to capitalise on Manchester City’s earlier 2-1 defeat at Villa Park, which marked the first time Enzo Maresca’s side had dropped points in the league this season. Both teams now have 21 points, although City remain ahead on goal difference.
The victory was particularly important for Arsenal after their demanding midweek schedule, which included a 2-2 draw away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Arteta highlighted Gabriel’s determination as an example of the mentality he expects from his players. The Brazilian defender had raised concerns after an injury scare early in the second half but chose to continue playing before scoring the goal that helped secure the victory.
The Arsenal manager explained that the reactions of Gabriel’s teammates had initially caused concern, but the defender quickly indicated that he wanted to remain on the pitch. Arteta praised his commitment and described him as an excellent example of the team’s collective spirit.
Arteta also reserved special praise for Konsa, who has adapted quickly since joining Arsenal from Aston Villa in August. The England international has stepped into the defensive line following William Saliba’s injury, building a strong partnership with Gabriel despite arriving without a pre-season with his new teammates.
The Arsenal manager described Konsa’s seamless integration and consistent performances as remarkable, particularly given the challenge of joining a club with established defensive partnerships and high expectations.
Konsa’s opening goal was also significant because it ended Arsenal’s wait for a non-penalty set-piece goal during the current campaign. The Gunners had developed a reputation for their effectiveness from dead-ball situations during their previous title-winning season.
Arteta expressed hope that the goal would restore confidence in Arsenal’s set-piece threat, praising the work of set-piece coach Nicolas Jover and the attention to detail shown by the players during training.
With both defenders contributing goals and strong performances at the back, Arsenal secured an important victory that keeps them level with Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
