Arsenal vs Manchester City: Arteta Seeks First Trophy in Six Years as Guardiola's Rebuilt City Face Wembley Test

Posted : 22 March 2026

Two of England's defining clubs meet at Wembley on Sunday afternoon in what is the first major final of the 2025/26 season. For the first time in the competition's history, the top two Premier League sides meet in a League Cup final; a detail that elevates this fixture well beyond a standard domestic cup tie.

The stakes are clear for both managers. Arsenal are seeking to lift the League Cup for just the third time in their history, and Arteta has the chance to become the first Gunners manager to win both of his major finals in charge. The Gunners have not won a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup; a drought of six years that has weighed heavily on a project that has otherwise flourished. Arsenal have been unbeaten against City in their last six meetings in all competitions, a run that reinforces their growing confidence heading into this showdown.

For Guardiola, victory would deliver a first winner's medal at City for several of his new signings, including Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Omar Marmoush, and Antoine Semenyo. City arrive at Wembley bruised, having been knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid for the third time in four seasons; a 5-1 aggregate defeat that included a Bernardo Silva red card and a Federico Valverde hat-trick in the first leg.

In the Premier League, the gap is equally stark. Arsenal hold a nine-point lead at the top, while City have faltered with draws against Nottingham Forest and West Ham in their last two league matches. A win at Wembley could represent a pivotal moment for City's psychological momentum heading into a crucial run-in.

Erling Haaland has scored in each of his last three appearances against Arsenal, yet has never found the net in six appearances for City at Wembley. Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Martinelli have each contributed goals or assists in each of their last three outings against City.

Arteta was direct in his pre-final assessment: "It's one of the defining moments because at the end, it's whether you win the trophy or not; and that's the most important thing once you get to the final."

Kick-off at Wembley Stadium is at 16:30 GMT.
