Arsenal kicked off their 2025–26 UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-0 away win against Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés on Tuesday. Despite dominating possession and creating multiple chances, the Gunners struggled to break down a determined Bilbao defense in the first half.
Manager Mikel Arteta made key substitutions in the second half, bringing on Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. Martinelli made an immediate impact, scoring less than a minute after entering the game, following a well-timed pass from Trossard. Later, Martinelli provided the assist for Trossard’s goal, which sealed the 2-0 victory.
Arsenal’s earlier opportunities included a near-miss from Viktor Gyökeres, but Bilbao, making their first Champions League appearance since 2014, offered little offensive threat, allowing the Gunners to maintain a clean sheet.
The win represents a strong start for Arsenal, who were eliminated in the semifinals last season by Paris Saint-Germain. With this momentum, the team will aim to continue their positive form in upcoming Champions League fixtures.
