Arsenal have opened discussions with Valencia over a potential move for Spanish defender Cristhian Mosquera, as Mikel Arteta’s side looks to bolster its backline ahead of the new season. The 20-year-old, who is comfortable playing both as a centre-back and right-back, has emerged as the Gunners’ top defensive target for the summer transfer window.
While Arsenal have previously expressed interest in Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, concerns over limited game time behind established starters Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba may deter the England international from a move to north London.
Mosquera’s consistency and experience at a young age make him a valuable prospect. The Spain Under-21 international featured in nearly every match for Valencia last season, completing the full 90 minutes in 37 of the club’s 38 La Liga fixtures. Arsenal’s interest in the versatile defender aligns with their ambition to build squad depth and future-proof their defence, especially with European competition on the horizon.
It’s been a particularly eventful period for the club, which is also finalising a deal for Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard. A transfer worth up to £15 million has been agreed, with the Danish international set to undergo a medical. Additionally, Arsenal are close to signing goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, adding more experience to their squad.
Youth development remains a focus at the Emirates as well, with 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly signing a new five-year contract after a breakout season featuring 39 appearances. Fellow defender Gabriel recently committed to a long-term deal, indicating Arteta’s intent to maintain stability in defence while introducing fresh talent into the squad.
