Arsenal Star Viktor Gyokeres Hits Stunning Hat-Trick to Power Sweden Past Ukraine in Playoff

Posted : 27 March 2026

Viktor Gyokeres delivered a masterclass in clinical finishing to keep Sweden’s World Cup dreams alive with a 3-1 victory over Ukraine. In a high-stakes playoff semi-final held at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium, the Arsenal striker proved his world-class credentials by netting all three goals for his nation. This vital win ends a difficult period for the Swedish national team and moves them within one match of the 2026 finals.

The breakthrough came just six minutes into the contest when Gyokeres converted a pinpoint cross from Benjamin Nygren. Despite missing key attackers Alexander Isak and Dejan Kulusevski through injury, Sweden looked dangerous throughout the first half. Gyokeres doubled the advantage shortly after the break, latching onto a long ball from goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt before outmuscling the defense to score.

Sweden’s dominance was confirmed in the 73rd minute when the Gunners' talisman won and converted a penalty to complete his hat-trick. Ukraine managed a late consolation goal through Matvii Ponomarenko, but it was not enough to spark a comeback. The defeat likely marks the end of Serhiy Rebrov’s tenure as Ukraine coach, with his contract set to expire in two months.

Sweden manager Graham Potter was full of praise for his striker’s "incredible" performance after securing his first win in the role. Potter noted that Gyokeres' hold-up play and defensive work were just as important as his three goals. The coach highlighted the team’s mental strength, especially since Sweden reached the playoffs via the Nations League after a winless group campaign.

Rebrov also acknowledged the quality of the opposition, stating that Gyokeres showed exactly why he is regarded as one of Europe's best. The Ukrainian manager lamented his team's inability to handle the early pressure but admitted the Swedish striker made the difference. Ukraine’s wait for a first World Cup appearance since 2006 continues following this disappointing exit in Spain.

The focus now shifts to Tuesday’s winner-takes-all final against Poland at the Strawberry Arena in Solna. A victory in that match would see Sweden book their place in the expanded 48-team tournament in North America. Potter emphasized that while this result was a major step forward, the job remains unfinished until they overcome the Polish side.
