Arsenal's explosive 6-0 victory over Sheffield United narrows gap at Premier League summit

Posted : 05 March 2024

The 27th round of the Premier League concluded on Monday with Arsenal delivering an explosive performance, securing a dominant 6-0 away victory against Sheffield United. Following Liverpool's dramatic win in Nottingham and Manchester City's 1-3 success in the derby, Mikel Arteta's team narrowed the gap at the top to a mere two points.

Arsenal's remarkable run includes seven consecutive league victories, boasting a formidable 24-2 goal difference in their last five games. Notably, Arsenal achieved a historic milestone as the first team in the top-tier English league to score at least five goals in three consecutive away matches. Meanwhile, Sheffield United suffered a streak of three consecutive home games conceding at least five goals.

The Gunners wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking a commanding 4-0 lead by the 25th minute with goals from Martin Odgor (5), Gayden Bogle (13, own goal), Gabriel Martinelli (15), and Kai Habertz (25).

Delkan Rice contributed the fifth goal, marking a historic moment in the 39th minute, while Ben Witt joined the scoring spree in the second half (58). Bokayo Saka netted two goals before being substituted at halftime, while Habertz, Reyes, and Martinelli added to their impressive assist records.

With this victory, Arsenal now boasts the best goal record in the league, tallying 45 goals and finding the net a total of 68 times this season, surpassing all other teams. However, the triumph was marred by the injury-related departure of Martinelli in the 64th minute.

In Italy, Inter Milan continued their relentless form, securing their 12th consecutive victory across all competitions with a 2-1 home win over Genoa. The Italian league leaders capitalized on Juventus' loss to Napoli, widening the gap at the top to 15 points and solidifying their path to reclaiming the championship.

Alexis Sanchez, aged 35, seized a rare opportunity in the lineup, contributing an assist to Cristian Aslani (30) and converting a penalty (38), while Juan and Essex sealed the victory with a goal each (54).
