Arsenal reignite interest in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa

Posted : 12 August 2026

Arsenal have renewed their pursuit of Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa as Mikel Arteta looks to add further defensive strength to his squad. The 28-year-old remains on holiday after the World Cup and was unavailable for Villa's Super Cup meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Gunners previously explored a move for Konsa but were unwilling to go beyond roughly £30m, while Villa value the England international at around £60m. Arsenal now recognise that a significantly improved proposal would be required if they are to persuade Villa to consider a sale.

Konsa enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, making 48 appearances in all competitions and helping Villa win the Europa League. His ability to operate both centrally and in different defensive roles is understood to be one of the qualities attracting Arsenal.

Arsenal have also made enquiries about Tottenham captain Cristian Romero as they assess their defensive options. However, Spurs are firmly opposed to selling the Argentina international to their north London rivals, making a deal particularly difficult. Tottenham are instead in talks with Atletico Madrid over Romero's potential departure.

Romero missed the end of last season after suffering a knee injury against Sunderland in April, but recovered in time to start for Argentina at the World Cup. He also featured for 70 minutes in the final against Spain.

With Arsenal continuing to explore defensive reinforcements, Konsa appears to have emerged as one of their leading targets. However, the gap between Arsenal's previous valuation and Villa's asking price remains a major obstacle to any potential transfer.
