Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has turned to the club's academy to bolster his squad ahead of a defining European fixture. Josh Ogunnaike, a highly-rated Nigerian defender, was promoted to first-team training on Tuesday at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. The 18-year-old was monitored closely by the coaching staff as the Gunners prepare to host Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium.
The promotion comes at a critical time for the North London club due to a growing injury list in defense. Key full-backs Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori are both considered major doubts for Wednesday’s clash. Both players were absent from training on Tuesday and did not feature in Arsenal’s recent 2-1 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth.
Ogunnaike has enjoyed a standout campaign within the Hale End academy system this season. Although he is still eligible for the Under-18 side, he has become a regular fixture for the development squad. His offensive contributions from left-back have particularly impressed the youth coaching staff during domestic and European assignments.
The teenager has been especially productive in the UEFA Youth League for Arsenal's Under-19 team. In five appearances in the competition, he has managed to record one goal and two assists. This consistent form has seen him train with the senior squad on multiple occasions throughout the current season.
Despite his frequent involvement in senior sessions, Ogunnaike is still waiting for his first competitive matchday squad inclusion. The current defensive crisis could provide the youngster with his best opportunity yet to bridge the gap to the first team. He originally joined the Arsenal academy at age 13 and is currently in the second year of his scholarship.
Arsenal hold a slim 1-0 aggregate lead following a late victory in the first leg in Lisbon. The team is aiming to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the second consecutive season. Achieving this would mark a significant milestone in the club's European history under Arteta’s leadership.
Arteta remains cautious about his team selection given the high stakes of the competition. However, the inclusion of Ogunnaike suggests the manager is ready to trust academy graduates if senior options remain unavailable. Fans are eager to see if the Nigerian starlet will finally make the bench for the crucial knockout tie.
