Arsenal manager promotes Nigerian striker to first-team training for PSG

Posted : 07 May 2025

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has promoted Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, a talented striker of Nigerian descent, to the first-team training ahead of their UEFA Champions League semifinal second-leg match against Paris Saint-Germain. The move signals Arteta's trust in the 22-year-old as the Gunners gear up for the pivotal clash at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

Butler-Oyedeji, born in London to a Nigerian father and a Saint Vincent and the Grenadines mother, took part in a training session with the senior team at the Sobha Realty Training Centre on Monday. The session marked the intensification of preparations for the highly anticipated encounter, as Arsenal aims to recover from their first-leg loss.

The young forward, who is a product of Arsenal's Hale End Academy, was included in the matchday squad for the first leg at the Emirates Stadium last Tuesday but did not feature in the 1-0 defeat. His absence from the field did not dampen his spirits, as his progression with the team has been notable.

Butler-Oyedeji made his senior debut for Arsenal in January 2025 in a Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb and followed it up with his Premier League debut in a victory over Ipswich Town. These appearances mark a significant step in his career, showcasing his potential and readiness for top-level football.

During Monday’s training, Butler-Oyedeji was seen alongside first-team regulars, including Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino, and Riccardo Calafiori. The presence of these experienced players highlighted the rising star's integration into the squad, which is crucial as Arteta looks for solutions to overturn the deficit from the first leg.

With Arsenal needing a strong response to Paris Saint-Germain's 1-0 advantage, Butler-Oyedeji is eager to play a key role in Arteta’s tactical plans. Known for his standout performances in the youth system, the striker will be hoping for an opportunity to contribute to the team’s Champions League aspirations.

Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, will be looking to solidify their first-leg lead and continue their pursuit of a first-ever Champions League title. Historically, PSG has struggled against Arsenal, having only secured one win in six competitive meetings, while the North London side has claimed two victories and three draws.
