Arsenal manager elevates two Nigerian teens for first-team practice

Posted : 30 March 2024

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta assessed two Nigerian-descent teenagers on Good Friday, just ahead of the Gunners' upcoming Premier League match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

One of the teenagers, Cam'ron Ismail, a tri-national defender, was photographed during training, as seen on Arsenal's official website.

Ismail, who received a call-up to an Egypt U19 training camp in October 2023, is eligible to represent Egypt, England, or Nigeria due to his father's nationality.

This isn't Ismail's first experience training with the senior squad; he previously trained with them before a Champions League clash against Sevilla approximately five months ago.

Although Ismail isn't listed on Arsenal's primary Premier League roster, reserved for senior players, he can still play in the top-flight as he's considered an U21 player.

Similarly, Ethan Nwaneri, who recently signed his first professional contract with Arsenal, joined first-team training after returning from Young Lions duty in the Elite Round of qualifiers for the 2024 European U17 Championship.

According to Jeorge Bird, Nwaneri, Ayden Heaven, and Myles Lewis-Skelly, among other academy players, participated in the training session alongside Ismail.

Arsenal, currently leading the Premier League table, have won their last eight matches, with their last away defeat in the league dating back to December against Fulham.
