Arsenal Knock Out Real Madrid

Posted : 17 April 2025

Arsenal triumphed 2-1 over Real Madrid in Spain on Wednesday, completing a dominant 5-1 aggregate victory to advance to the Champions League semifinals. Bukayo Saka gave the Gunners the lead in the second half after having an early penalty saved, with Vinicius Junior briefly restoring parity for Madrid.

However, Gabriel Martinelli scored a late goal, securing Arsenal's first semifinal appearance in Europe's premier competition since 2009.

Real Madrid, struggling to replicate their usual dominance, were unable to break down Arsenal's resilient defense, despite their belief that they could turn the game around. The Premier League side stood firm, with goalkeeper David Raya remaining largely untested, and their disciplined performance carried them to victory.

Arsenal held their nerve to reach the semifinals for only the third time in their history, having been superior over both legs.

The match saw a series of VAR reviews, with a penalty awarded to Arsenal in the first half after a foul on Mikel Merino. Saka's penalty attempt was saved by Courtois, but Madrid's hopes were quickly dashed when they were denied a penalty of their own after a review showed no foul by Declan Rice on Kylian Mbappe. Madrid struggled to find momentum, and Arsenal capitalized on their opportunities.

Arsenal's breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Saka, set up by Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino, made up for his earlier miss by chipping Courtois for the opening goal.

Although Vinicius Junior equalized shortly after, Martinelli sealed the win with a composed finish, securing Arsenal's progression to face Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals.
