Arokodare Impresses Ajax Coach After Assist on Eredivisie Debut

Posted : 10 August 2026

Tolu Arokodare received strong praise from Ajax head coach Míchel Sánchez after making an impressive Eredivisie debut in Ajax's 2-0 victory away to PEC Zwolle on Sunday. The Nigerian striker came off the bench and helped change the game as Ajax began the 2026/27 league campaign with three points.

Arokodare entered the match in the 73rd minute with the score still 0-0. Just three minutes later, he played an important role in the move that ended with Jorthy Mokio putting Ajax ahead. Julian Brandt then sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal.

Sánchez was particularly pleased with the contribution of his substitutes. He highlighted Arokodare's work and said the Nigerian needs to regain his rhythm after a difficult spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Ajax coach also praised Mokio and Brandt for making a decisive impact after entering the game.

The performance offers Arokodare an encouraging start to his new chapter in Amsterdam. The 25-year-old joined Ajax from Wolves on a season-long loan on July 29, with the agreement including an option for the Dutch club to make the transfer permanent.

Arokodare moved to Ajax after one season in England that produced six goals in 38 appearances for Wolves. He started only one of the club's final 10 matches of the 2025/26 campaign as Wolves were relegated from the Premier League.

The Nigerian had previously enjoyed a more productive period at Belgian club Genk. He finished as the Jupiler Pro League's leading scorer in the 2024/25 season before earning his move to Wolves. Ajax see him as a different type of attacking option, with the club describing him as a striker profile they did not previously have in the squad.

His arrival also gives Sánchez another physical option in attack as Ajax compete in domestic and European football. The Dutch giants entered the new Eredivisie season after finishing fifth last term and are also involved in the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds.

The victory over Zwolle gives Ajax an ideal start under Sánchez in the league. The result also showed the depth available from the bench, with Arokodare, Mokio and Brandt all contributing to a win that was still goalless when the Nigerian entered the pitch.
