Arokodare Strike Lifts Super Eagles Over Rwanda in World Cup Qualifier

Posted : 07 September 2025

Nigeria revived their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes with a narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday. Tolu Arokodare’s 51st-minute goal proved decisive, giving the Super Eagles three crucial points and moving them to 10 in the standings.

Despite the win, Nigeria remain in third place, six points behind leaders South Africa, who defeated Lesotho 3-0 in Bloemfontein on Friday. However, the Super Eagles could benefit from a disciplinary ruling, as Bafana Bafana risk losing points and goals for fielding an ineligible player earlier in the campaign. That scenario would keep Nigeria firmly in contention for qualification.

Benin Republic, currently second after edging Zimbabwe 1-0 in Abidjan, will face Nigeria on the final matchday in October, adding further weight to the qualification race. But before then, the Super Eagles head to Bloemfontein for a high-stakes showdown with South Africa on Tuesday — a clash expected to be fiercely contested given the long-standing rivalry between the two nations.

Victor Osimhen thought he had given Nigeria an early lead in the 8th minute, but his effort was ruled offside before he was forced off with injury midway through the first half. Rwanda’s goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari produced a string of superb saves to frustrate Nigeria, denying Ademola Lookman, Wilfred Ndidi, Simon Moses, and Alex Iwobi.

The breakthrough finally came six minutes into the second half when Arokodare pounced during a goalmouth scramble, smashing the ball home for his second international goal. Nigeria pressed for more, with Cyriel Dessers, Ndidi, and Moses all going close, but Ntwari’s brilliance kept the scoreline respectable for Rwanda.

With the win secured, the Super Eagles now turn their attention to Bloemfontein, where Tuesday’s encounter against Bafana Bafana could define their World Cup qualification campaign.
