Arne Slot Bids Emotional Farewell After Liverpool Exit Following Sudden Sacking

Posted : 01 June 2026

Arne Slot has insisted that he leaves Liverpool “exactly where it belongs: among Europe’s elite” after the Dutchman was dismissed from his role as head coach. The 47-year-old departed the club following a dramatic end to his tenure, just months after guiding the Reds to a Premier League title in his debut season.

Despite that early success, Liverpool’s form collapsed in the following campaign, with the club finishing fifth in the league and 25 points behind champions Arsenal. The disappointing domestic performance ultimately led to the decision by the club’s hierarchy to part ways with the manager.

Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp in 2024, made a dream start at Anfield by delivering the club’s 20th league title in front of their home supporters. However, a difficult second season that included 20 defeats in all competitions overshadowed his earlier achievement, even though Liverpool still secured qualification for next season’s Champions League.

In an emotional open letter published in the Liverpool Echo, Slot reflected on his time at the club and expressed gratitude to the supporters, saying their welcome and support played a major role in his journey. He said he leaves with confidence in the future and believes the squad has built strong foundations that will last.

The Dutch coach also emphasized the importance of securing Champions League football, describing it as a key responsibility that ensures Liverpool remain competitive at the highest level in the years ahead. He added that change is a natural part of football but expressed belief that the club will continue to bring pride to its supporters.

Slot paid tribute to the fans’ involvement in Liverpool’s 20th league title, recalling the emotional scenes at Anfield and across the city during the celebrations. He said the achievement belonged to everyone connected to the club and will remain a significant part of its history.

He also reflected on the deeper emotional connection between the team and supporters, highlighting the unity shown during both celebrations and moments of tragedy. Slot referenced the passing of forward Diogo Jota and praised the compassion shown by the Liverpool community during that difficult period.

Liverpool are now expected to open formal negotiations with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as they look for a new head coach ahead of the next season.

Slot concluded his message by stating that Liverpool will always be judged by major honours and insisted that during his time in charge, the team never stopped striving to meet those expectations.
