Arnautovic's strike gives Inter Milan edge in Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid

Posted : 21 February 2024

In the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash, substitute Marko Arnautovic became Inter Milan's hero by securing a crucial advantage against Atletico Madrid. The breakthrough came when Lautaro Martinez's shot was parried by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, and Arnautovic seized the opportunity, unleashing a powerful shot from a challenging angle.

Despite missing earlier opportunities in the second half, including heading over the bar and firing wide with an open goal, Arnautovic's decisive strike tilted the balance in favor of the Italian side.

Marko Arnautovic's entry into the game occurred as a replacement for the injured Marcus Thuram just before halftime. Inter Milan, last season's Champions League runners-up, dominated the match with Martinez having two close-range headers denied by the vigilant Oblak.

Alvaro Morata, returning from a knee injury, entered the game as a second-half substitute for Atletico but failed to significantly impact the proceedings under Diego Simeone's management, marking the coach's 100th Champions League match.

Inter Milan's goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, enjoyed a quiet night with no shots on target, securing his 21st clean sheet across all competitions this season.

Currently leading Serie A by a comfortable nine-point margin, Simone Inzaghi's squad has been in formidable form, with their last defeat dating back to December 20 against Bologna in the Coppa Italia.

The second leg of this intense encounter is scheduled to take place at Civitas Metropolitano on March 13, promising another thrilling chapter in their Champions League journey.
