Aribo scores first 2024 goal, Ajayi excels, Onyeka misses Man City

Posted : 21 February 2024

Here are the notable performances of Nigerian players in foreign leagues on Tuesday, 20th February. In the Championship, Joe Aribo, a midfielder for the Super Eagles, scored his first goal of the year during Southampton's 2-1 defeat against Hull City. Aribo entered the pitch at halftime and managed to reduce the deficit for the Saints with a powerful shot from just inside the area in the 88th minute.

Semi Ajayi, the silver medal-winning defender from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, made his first appearance for West Bromwich Albion after returning from Cote d’Ivoire. He replaced Darnell Anthony Furlong in the 82nd minute as West Brom secured a 3-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at the Home Park.

Jamilu Collins and Cardiff City ended a three-game losing streak with a goalless draw against Blackburn Rovers at the Cardiff City Stadium.

In the Premier League, Frank Onyeka started for Brentford in their match against champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Despite Onyeka's impressive performance in the middle of the park, Brentford left Manchester empty-handed as Erling Haaland’s 71st-minute strike secured a crucial 1-0 win for Manchester City.

Nigeria’s four representatives at the Viarregio Tournament advanced to the quarterfinals. Hafiz Ibrahim scored a hat-trick for Ojodu United in their 5-0 win over Westchester United from the United States. Mavlon secured a 3-2 victory over Fiorentina with another hat-trick from former Golden Eaglets striker, Charles Agada. Beyond Limits defeated Avellino 3-1, and Alex Transformation triumphed 2-0 against Ukrainian side Rukh.

Etiosa Ighodaro and Super Sports United progressed to the next round of the FA Cup after beating Cape Town City on penalties. The Round of 32 clash ended in a 1-1 draw after Mayo cancelled out Campbell’s early strike. Despite extra time, the teams remained level, but Cape Town missed three of their four spot kicks, allowing Super Sports to claim a 3-1 win at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.
