Argentina Defeats Jordan 3-1 to Complete Perfect World Cup Group Stage

Argentina completed a flawless Group J campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Jordan, securing maximum points and extending its title defence into the Round of 32.

The reigning world champions took control early in the contest and opened the scoring in the 19th minute through Giovani Lo Celso. The midfielder finished off a well-worked move to give Argentina the advantage after dominating possession in the opening stages.

Lautaro Martínez doubled the lead in the 31st minute from the penalty spot after Jordan conceded a foul inside the area. The Inter Milan striker made no mistake from 12 yards, sending Argentina into halftime with a comfortable two-goal cushion.

Jordan responded positively after the break and reduced the deficit in the 55th minute through Mousa Al-Taamari. The winger's goal was a memorable moment for the Nashama as it marked the team's first goal against the defending world champions at a FIFA World Cup.

Argentina introduced captain Lionel Messi at the start of the second half, and the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner made an immediate impact. In the 80th minute, Messi curled a superb direct free-kick into the net to restore Argentina's two-goal advantage and seal a 3-1 victory.

The result ensured Argentina finished the group stage with three wins from three matches, underlining its status as one of the favourites to retain the World Cup trophy. The South American giants have combined attacking quality with defensive discipline throughout the group phase and now turn their attention to the knockout rounds.

Jordan, despite the defeat, earned praise for its spirited performance against one of the tournament's strongest teams. Although the Middle Eastern nation exited the competition at the group stage, scoring against the defending champions provided a memorable highlight in its World Cup campaign.

Argentina's reward for winning Group J is a Round of 32 clash with Cape Verde.

With confidence growing and Messi continuing to influence matches, Argentina will be aiming to carry its impressive form into the knockout stage as it pursues another World Cup title.
