Argentina continued their build-up to the FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Honduras in their second-to-last warm-up match on Saturday.
The match, played in front of a lively crowd at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, saw strong support for the reigning world champions, although fans were left disappointed as Lionel Messi did not feature. The Argentine captain remained on the bench as he continues his recovery from muscle fatigue.
Argentina took control of the game in the first half and broke the deadlock in the 37th minute. Lautaro Martínez converted from the penalty spot after Nicolás Tagliafico was brought down inside the box.
After the restart, Argentina doubled their advantage early in the second half when Atlético Madrid forward Giuliano Simeone finished off a well-worked move. The goal came after a clever backheel assist from Martínez, allowing Simeone to score from close range.
Following the match, Martínez emphasized the team’s determination to defend their World Cup title, stating that the squad is fully committed to representing Argentina at the highest level once again.
Head coach Lionel Scaloni made several changes during the second half but chose not to risk Messi, who recently suffered a minor injury while playing for Inter Miami. The 38-year-old’s recovery is being closely managed ahead of the tournament.
Scaloni explained that the team is carefully balancing player workloads as they prepare for the competition, noting the squad’s strong commitment even among those who did not feature.
Messi, who is widely expected to retire from international football after the tournament, remains a central figure in Argentina’s plans. He currently holds the record for the most World Cup appearances and is closing in on the all-time top scorer record.
Argentina will face Iceland in their final warm-up match before the World Cup, after which they will begin their Group J campaign against Algeria on June 16, followed by matches against Austria and Jordan.
